Oakwood Manor

The land where the Oakwood Manor stands today has been in the McEvoy Family since it was granted to pioneer Thomas McEvoy of Waterford Village, Kilkenny County Ireland on May 20 1858 for the sum of 21 pounds 17 shillings and sixpence. Sir Charles Tupper signed the grant.  Thomas died Sept. 29 1877 and is buried on the land as he requested.

Thomas McEvoy (my great grandfather), John McEvoy (my grandfather) and Tingley McEvoy (my father) all farmed this land.  Sharon and I farmed in the early 70's, then gave up the large gardens but kept the farm animals till the late 90"s.

Cape Breton Bed and BreakfastIn 1973 the Cape Breton Development Corporation advertised for family's in Victoria County, Cape Breton who had large older homes to offer a Bed and Breakfast to people traveling around the Cabot Trail. In 1974 we became a "Cape Breton Bed and Breakfast". The program stated homeowners displaying the Official "Cape Breton Bed and Breakfast" sign have made a commitment to offer clean, comfortable accommodation, complete with warm hospitality .

We have upheld our commitment and have been blessed by meeting so many interesting, friendly guests over the last 35 years.  We still display our "Cape Breton Bed and Breakfast' sign on our home.

Oakwood Manor is Canada's longest running Official Bed and Breakfast.
